Trevi’s Marble Saint Matthew Statue
Our St. Matthew statue is highly reminiscent of his classic posture and expression, capturing the divine atmosphere as he meditates and writes the Gospel. This saint sculpture is carved from natural red marble, and the surface of the sculpture displays a glossy finish. The sculpture shows St. Matthew’s deep eyes and the scroll clutched in his hands, and the folds in his clothing are smooth and natural, realistically showing the texture of the fabric. A little angel is standing beside the saint.
Sculptures of St. Matthew show him as an author, usually depicting him holding a pen and scroll, which emphasizes his identity as the author of the Gospel of Matthew. The style of the sculpture reflects typical features of Baroque art, such as dynamic poses, fine folds of clothing, and vivid depictions of facial expressions. At the feet of the saint, who in Christian tradition was previously a tax collector before being called by Jesus to become a disciple, is a money bag.
